Bomber Jacket

Price range: $150.00 through $500.00

Bunker gear, also known as turnout gear, is the primary protective clothing firefighters wear when responding to fires and other hazardous situations. The term originates from the historical practice of storing pants and boots near firefighters’ bunks for rapid access during emergencies. For the most part, firefighters do not sleep next to their gear any longer due to increased focus on health and wellness. Modern bunker gear is designed to provide full-body protection while allowing mobility and comfort in extreme conditions.

The jacket and pants are the main component of a firefighter’s personal protective equipment with a standard service life of 10 years.

Modern bunker gear uses a three-layer system to maximize protection for them:

  1. The outer shell: Made from flame-resistant aramid fibers such as Nomex or Kevlar, providing durability, abrasion resistance, and initial flame protection.  Fire Crafted uses this part of the coat and pants for products including firewood carriers, hot pants hot pads, poop bag holders, radio bags, and scrappy bags.  The traditional color is black or tan.
  2. The moisture barrier: A breathable, waterproof layer that prevents water, steam, and chemical penetration while allowing vapor to escape. This material is used by Fire Crafted for the same items listed above in number 1.  The moisture barrier is normally white, cream, or grey, and at Fire Crafted we reuse this material in as many products as possible.
  3. The thermal liner is what Fire Crafted recycles to make our Bomber Jacket: The insulating materials absorb and reflect heat, protecting the firefighter from extreme temperatures and radiant heat, these layers work together to protect against thermal burns, steam burns, cuts, etc.

The thermal liner is a complete unit, normally made of a quilted material as shown in the main product image photo; and can be purchased as is (unaltered jacket) for $150.  For customers seeking a custom-made jacket, Fire Crafted will work with them to create a unique, one-of-a-kind jacket made specially for them.  See photos for examples.  Prices for the altered thermal liner range from $400-500. Colors vary, but normally come in light blue, grey, gold, and sometimes in navy.
